King
Street completes 'The Royal Way' with it's wide pedestrian
friendly street scape, bordered with The Old Victorian
Shopping Arcade gives King Street yet another shopping
dimension. Built in 1881, the Arcade still retains most
of its original features and architecture.
The Athenaeum dominates the top of
King Street with its spire and majestic statue of William
Wallace (Braveheart). Built in 1816 as a reading room (library)
and then in 1859 had the statue and portico added by Charles
Rogers, the man responsible for the Wallace monument.
