This plain 3 storey school was built in 1788 to the design of Gideon Gray. It was used as a grammar school until 1856.It was for almost 70 years the "Grammar School" of Stirling and one of its predecessors is first mentioned in the Burgh Records of 1523. The earliest reference to a school in Stirling, however, dates back to the 12th Century, when there was already a church school in the town. For centuries relatively few children would have had the chance to take advantage of the limited kinds of education provided. Education had to be paid for, but some financial assistance was given to help in educating children from poor families.
